Personal branding photography is about much more than a few portraits, and as part of my Creativas de Madrid project, I photographed Clara, a Spanish ceramist, at her studio and workshop in Chamartín. With Clara I wanted to capture the place where she works, the process behind her ceramics and the beautiful objects she creates.
Clara and her architect husband transformed what used to be a bar like what we call here "de toda la vida" into this inspiring workspace, creating a place that feels very much connected to the work she does there.

Clara describes her relationship with ceramics as a way of reconnecting with her own sense of time. While so much of our everyday life revolves around speed and immediacy, working with clay gives her a slower rhythm, with its waiting, pauses and transitions. She makes everything herself, from choosing the clay and developing her glazes to experimenting with new finishes and photographing her pieces. Her work is very much about the beauty of everyday objects, with each piece made slowly and with a lot of attention to detail. She also has a special connection to Portugal and regularly visits, making a point of meeting local makers and seeing what they are creating there.

I loved spending a little time photographing Clara in her studio, surrounded by the materials, tools and pieces that make up her everyday work. These are the kinds of details I wanted to document through Creativas de Madrid, showing not only what these women create, but also the spaces and processes behind their work.
