Surprise Proposal in Madrid * Campo del Moro & Sabatini Gardens

A surprise proposal in Madrid made their first trip together to Europe even more special. This young couple had travelled from the US to spend some time in Madrid before heading south to explore more of Spain, and he had this one more thing planned before they continued their trip.

As lovers of travel and nature, they spend a lot of time exploring the National Parks back home, so Madrid was a beautiful change of scenery for this particular moment. Campo del Moro felt like the perfect place to start, with its gardens and views towards the Royal Palace bringing that unmistakable Madrid feeling to the proposal. From there, we made our way towards the Sabatini Gardens, where the warm golden-hour light wrapped everything in an even more beautiful glow.

A one-hour session works particularly well for a surprise proposal like this. There is enough time to capture the proposal itself, get to know the couple a little afterwards and then wander through one or two nearby locations while photographing their connection naturally. The beginning can take a little longer to settle into than a regular couple or family session, though. After all, only one person knows what is about to happen. The other person doesn't even know they're coming for a photoshoot, and suddenly they're meeting a photographer, being proposed to and trying to process all the excitement at once! I always like to spend a little time chatting and getting them talking about themselves, because once they forget about the camera, that's when the best moments start to happen.

By the time we reached the Sabatini Gardens, the surprise had turned into pure excitement, and the rest of the session felt much more like the beginning of an adventure together. A first trip to Europe, a new engagement and a little bit more of Madrid to discover before heading south. Not a bad way to start a Spanish adventure.
